All that glitters is not gold

Chrome

At Tamarit Motorcycles, our motorcycles are produced one by one with a high quality as any premium brand in the market. The aesthetic result of our motorcycles amazes a great number of people in the motor sector.

One of the techniques we are going to tell you about today is the chrome plating or electroanalysis process. It is a chemical process that makes the parts of our motorcycles shiny as a mirror. This process differentiates us and stands out as a premium motorcycle brand.

How is a part chrome-plated?

Chrome plating process or Electroanalysis

If we look up in the dictionary what electroanalysis is, it says: "Method that relates some of the electrical quantities that characterize the electrochemical circuit with the concentration of a substance that reacts or may react on the electrodes".

What we intend with these texts is not to bore with all the chemistry part of the process, but to explain the craftsmanship that Tamarit performs on his parts.

Polishing, the most important step.

Chemical craftsmanship

Everything from the smallest nut to the complete chassis of a motorcycle can be chromium-plated. The most important part of the process is the polishing, a manual labor of hundreds of hours. Chroming a chassis can take one person a week to make it perfect.

What is polishing? Polishing is clean and, of course, polishing a small part is not the same as polishing a complete chassis. To polish a small part, normally it is used as a radial. To polish a chassis, an industrial polisher is used. In Tamarit we have an industrial polisher, where part of our team spends hundreds of hours polishing parts of our motorcycles.

We cannot trivialize the polishing process as the cleaning of a part. When we talk about polishing, we talk about the finest skills. Any spot, pinhole or bad weld would generate what in the industry jargon is known as "crater", if in that crater acid or water gets into it, the whole process has to be repeated.

This manual process of chrome plating, nickel plating or brass plating a part takes hundreds of hours of manual labor and craftsmanship. In our experience, chrome plating a chassis is the work of one person for a whole week.

Next steps.

The magic of chemistry

We use this process on different materials: aluminum, iron and plastic. For each material, the techniques applied are different.

Basically, they are all put through the ultrasonic process in a pool where they are stripped, cleaned, degreased and amalgamated with different chemical processes for each material.

In a second stage, a nickel bath is given, in some cases with alkaline copper and, in the case of plastic, with etched palladium to turn it into a metallic part. To finish the process, the part is bathed one last time in chrome, nickel, brass or gold.

The last step is key and where the result of hundreds of hours of work can be seen.

Gold, brass, nickel, bronze or palladium

Precious and non-precious materials

In the last step, where electricity does the magic by getting the precious metals to adhere to iron, aluminum or plastic, they are truly “precious” materials. As a curious fact, when they want to make something in gold, 24 karat liquid gold is introduced into the working pool to achieve this result.

The result, the greatest satisfaction.

Our trademark

In our work philosophy, we place great emphasis on effort. Every effort has a reward and these manual works that are disappearing, are the ones that from Tamarit we want to recover.

Like anything that costs, the result is wonderful. The result, after so many hours invested, is what makes us want to make chrome motorcycles all the time. We love what we do and this is the secret of our success: effort, perseverance and hard work.

On our project number 100, Jade, chrome plating played a major role, with hundreds of hours spent on chrome plating from the exhaust to the bikes' nuts and bolts.
